Cryin’ With Carlyle: Episode 1

(Cryin' With Carlyle is a feature that may or may not run throughout the rest of the Bruins-Maple Leafs series depending on how lazy the DOY staff is and how much more useless crying Randy Carlyle does)

In today's episdoe of Cryin' With Carlyle, Coach Randy is SUPER MAD that the Bruins are "cheating" at the face-off dot and that the silly ole referees are FAVORING the Bruins. He is VERY convinced he is correct. He even bet all his hair on it.

We did the research with Randy… and unfortunately the information we uncovered is very damning for the Bruins. It looks like Randy might be correct.

During the 2012-13 Regular Season, the four Bruins who took the most face-offs were Patrice Bergeron, David Krejci, Gregory Campbell and Chris Kelly.

Bergeron took 884 face-offs and won 549 of them for a winning percentage of 62%.

Krejci took 654 face-offs and won 361 of them for a winning percentage of 55%.

Campbell took 401 face-offs and won 189 of them for a winning percentage of 47%.

Kelly took 373 face-offs and won 216 of them for a winning percentage of 58%.

As those who paraphrase Meat Loaf might say, three out of four ain't bad. Overall, the Bruins have been pretty darn good at the dot.

However, as Randy pointed out to us, numbers don't lie!!!

During the 2012-13 Regular Season, the four Maple Leafs who took the most face-offs were Tyler BOZOak, Michelle (yes, Randy called him Michelle) Grabovski, Nazem Kadri and Jay McClement.

BOZOak took 1,063 face-offs and won 559 of them for a winning percentage of 53%.

Grabovski took 638 face-offs and won 323 of them for a winning percentage of 51%.

Kadri took 565 face-offs and won 250 of them for a winning percentage of 44%.

McClement took 393 face-offs and won 203 of them for a winning percentage of 52%.

… wait a second Randy! The Bruins win percentage was waaaaaaaaaaay better overall than Toronto! You LIED to us Randy! Your team sucks at the dot and apparently you're the only one who doesn't know it.

But wait a second here. Maybe these numbers changed in the playoffs!

Through three games in the playoffs:

BRUINS:

Bergeron took 60 face-offs and won 35 of them for a winning percentage of 58% (down 4% from regular season average).

Krejci took 54 face-offs and won 24 of them for a winning percentage of 44% (down 11% from regular season average).

Campbell took 25 face-offs and won 17 of them for a winning percentage of 68% (up 21% from regular season average).

Kelly took 33 face-offs and won 20 of them for a winning percentage of 61% (up 3% from regular season average).

MAPLE LEAFS:

BOZOak took 88 face-offs and won 38 of them for a winning percentage of 43% (down 10% from regular season average).

Grabovski took 48 face-offs and won 22 of them for a winning percentage of 46% (down 5% from regular season average).

Kadri took 22 face-offs and won 9 of them for a winning percentage of 41% (down 3% from regular season average).

McClement took 30 face-offs and won 9 of them for a winning percentage of 30% (down 22% from regular season average).

Are Campbell and McClement dueling or something? Those two are obviously the biggest changes. Krejci and BOZOak have plummeted in the playoffs. Bergeron, Kadri, and Grabovski have gone down slightly. Kelly is up slightly.

So really Randy, where is all your faceoff anger coming from? If the Bruins were consisntly better at face-offs in the regular season, doesn't it stand to reason that the Bruins would be better at face-offs in the PLAYOFFS? We know this whole "playoff" thing is new in Toronto but come on buddy.

Then again, you're a terrible, terrible coach on a team that over achieved, so proving that you're dumb sort of feels like picking on a guy in a coma.
