December was an awful month health-wise for the Bruins. So many bodies banged up and lost, we got a good dose of what sort of depth the Bruins have down in Providence. And to their credit, the call-ups have been solid in patching up the holes in the roster. Of course, things have gotten a bit bumpier lately with the team's PK in shambles, Seidenberg going down for the season, and Rask's rough patch in net.
But not all is lost. Tonight the Bruins will get some much needed help in the form of Shawn Thornton and Loui Eriksson.
Thornton returns after his 15 game suspension for his incident with Brooks Orpik. The Boston Globe has a great story on Thornton and what happened from his perspective. It's a great read. But now Thornton is looking to put that in the past while continuing to do what he's been doing for years, stand up for his teammates and add some energy to the team when he's on the ice.
Loui Eriksson also returns to the line-up tonight after also missing 15 games with the concussion he received from Orpik's reckless interference hit. Loui will be a huge asset to the Bs PK which has been utter crap in recent games. He's not a Seidenberg replacement, obviously, but his defensive skills will be a much needed addition to the team.
Hopefully no one sneezes too close to Eriksson, though. A third concussion in a season would be brutal.
Question remains: Who's out now that Thornton and Eriksson are in? And what will the line combos look like?
No Boychuk as he's back in Boston for personal reasons, most likely because Baby Boychuk is on the way. Poor doctors, that kid's going to come out of the womb delivering a brutal hipcheck.
Meanwhile, we think Boston should keep Reilly Smith with Bergeron and put Loui on the third line. We love what we've seen from Smith on Bergy's line, and putting Eriksson on the third line adds gives a defensive boost to that line. Plus we love the idea of the two Swedes teaming up with Ryan Spooner.
